A Professional’s Guide to the Best Skincare Routine

Our rituals, routines, and systems are important!

These regularly followed sequences keep us on schedule and showing up as our healthiest selves.

We want to share a professional’s guide to the best skincare routine because if you’re not applying these products in the right order, you could actually be wasting all of your money and time. :( Let's talk about a better way!

The Best Way

There’s a simple system for how to layer your skincare products so they can work for you!

Regardless of the products or season, this system won’t really change.

1. Start with Cleansing

Use a gentle cleanser with a brush, washcloth, or your fingertips. If you’re wearing a lot of makeup, consider double-cleansing. If you’re wanting to apply a mask, be sure to do that right after cleansing! (if you'd like to exfoliate, do it now!)

2. Tone

Toner helps deep clean your pores, gets rid of the rest of your makeup and debris from your cleanser, and restores the pH levels of your skin. Find the right toner and make it your second step.

3. Spot Treatment

If you have any blemishes, now is the time to treat them! Use something light during the day and your thicker treatments at night when you won't want to layer makeup on top of it.

4. Serum

Time for serums! Usually, just a few drops will be enough for your face and neck.

Serums are one of the most concentrated skincare products you can buy.

They’re very effective,  last a long time, and are chock full of active ingredients that sink straight into your skin! Check out our signature Beauty at the Lake Serums, here: Shop Serums.

5. Eye Cream

Use your fingertips to pat your eye cream around your undereye area and around and up under the eyebrow.

6. Moisturizer

Find a moisturizer that meets your skin’s needs! In the morning, you can use a moisturizer with hyaluronic acid to plump or combine two steps by applying a moisturizer with SPF. At night, feel free to use something thicker and richer (since you won't be layering makeup on top.)

7. Face Oil

If your skin is not acne-prone,  your moisturizer doesn’t include SPF, and you need additional moisture, pat your skin oil all over on top of your moisturizer. This will also create a seal over all of the skincare products you just applied!

8. SPF

Sunscreen is a non-negotiable! In every season, your skin can be damaged from the sun. Pat your moisturizer on top of it all (skip this step if your day moisturizer includes SPF).

You’re done! You can always add in a bit of massage and light therapy to your routine when you need it.

Find what you love. You may also find that you don’t need one or two of these steps and it’s best for you to skip them. That’s ok!

Try something new and keep what works.

All the best!
