Everything You Need to Know About Dark Circles Under Eyes

It's vulnerable. Thin and subject to harsh touch and movements, skin around the eyes is often our client’s greatest concern.

There are a few tell-tale signs of distress under the eyes. 😩 We’ll talk about the causes of dark circles and how to transform under eye skin from dead to divine.

DARK CIRCLE CAUSES

Dark circles are not subject to skin type; they’re an equal opportunity displeasure. 👎🏻

Estheticians and dermatologists have found more than a few reasons for dark circles to appear.

  1. Not Enough Sleep

  2. Genetics

  3. Allergies

  4. Age-related loss of collagen

  5. Skin Conditions

  6. Diet

  7. Dehydration

Dark Circles Under Eye

THE GOOD NEWS

Aside from genetics, these causes can be treated effectively! 😍

BUT FIRST

We want to give you a few general tips for under eye skin care.

  1. Always apply serums and cleansers from the outside in with your ring finger (be gentle!)

  2. Always wear sunscreen AND sunglasses to avoid unnecessary squinting

  3. Try sleeping on a silk pillowcase to avoid friction OR sleep on your back

REVERSE THE DISTRESS

Ok, let’s get to the good part.

Protect your sleep schedule.

Go to bed before 10pm, winter and summer. If it’s too bright to sleep, try wearing a silk eye mask. 😴 If you have trouble falling asleep, try adopting unwinding habits before bed. Keep your phone outside of the bedroom after 8pm, eat an earlier, lighter dinner and relax your mind and body before bed with breathing exercises, stretching or reading.

Allergies, Diet & Dehydration

Chemical imbalance? Maybe a deficiency in certain nutrients? Not enough iron? All of these have been linked to dark circles under the eyes. Talk to your doctor about checking your levels.

If you have a known food allergy that’s causing dark circles, talk to your doctor about an antihistamine! A little help goes a long way.

When it comes to hydration, shoot for half your body weight in ounces. 💦 For example, if you weigh 150 lbs, aim for 75 ounces of water per day.

Help yourself absorb it by adding fruits, veggies or a tiny pinch of sea salt to it (e.g. lemon, cucumber, blueberries, etc.). Electrolytes are important! Drinking too much water can deplete you from electrolytes, so keep it balanced and consistent. 🥰

Aging

Simply put, aging will exacerbate any cause for dark circles in this area. It’s also the villain when it comes to collagen loss which leads to thinner skin and less elastic skin.

The best treatment? Add an eye serum with plenty of humectants to your routine. Try our affordable signature serum and see the difference a little hydration can make! See the benefits and ingredients here.

You may also opt for filler to treat this area. 🥰 Using hyaluronic acid based dermal fillers, our nurse injectors essentially ‘add back’ the volume lost with age. Fillers are not permanent but can last from 6 months to 2 years without any maintenance.

Skin Conditions

There are a few skin conditions that can cause a flare up of dark circles, such as rosacea, eczema, autoimmune diseases, sun spots, melasma, etc. Talk to an esthetician (we would love to help!) or dermatologist about treating these conditions to fix those dark circles.
