Laurel Skin vs. Medical Grade Skincare

Updated: Jun 9, 2022

There is certainly no shortage of options when it comes to skincare products.

Depending on your lifestyle and goals, here are the three main categories of skincare products you can choose from:

  1. Medical grade skincare

  2. Over the Counter Skincare

  3. Organic or Biodynamic OTC Skincare

In this post, we’ll talk about the difference between medical-grade skincare and one of our favorite organic and biodynamic skincare lines, Laurel Skin.

What is Medical Grade Skincare?

Medical-grade skincare is FDA-regulated skincare crafted specifically to target medical conditions and needs, such as acne or wrinkles. This type of skincare is meant to offer both medicinal and cosmetic benefits and typically has a high percentage of what we call ‘active ingredients.’

What is Over the Counter (mainstream) Skincare?

OTC skincare includes products that are available at your local drug, beauty, or online store without a prescription. Because of FDA-Regulations, OTC products cannot 😶 make any medical claims stating that they ‘treat’ any skin condition.

OTC’s products sometimes include just trace amounts of active ingredients surrounded by synthetic additives. This is known as ‘angel dusting’ in the skincare industry.

What is Organic or Biodynamic OTC Skincare?

Organic skincare skips the synthetic additives and offers potent, organic ingredients. More pure than mainstream or medical-grade skin care lines, organic skincare is best for people who:

  • Have allergies or sensitivities

  • Are looking for a more conscious option

  • Are hoping to conceive, or are pregnant or breastfeeding

  • Are cognizant of toxins

  • Are immune-compromised or have had major illnesses

Beyond organic skincare, biodynamic skincare goes even further to create effective, environmentally friendly skincare options. We’ll dive deeper into biodynamic skincare later in this post.

Laurel Skin - Slow Farmed Skincare

Here at the studio, we prefer to use organic and biodynamic skin care products. Safe for everyone and beautifully crafted, these products complement our holistic, conscious approach to beauty.

Laurel Skin’s products are made thoughtfully by hand with effective whole plant ingredients. Part of their mission is to elevate the sacred ritual spa experience. We can confidently say … they do!

What sets Laurel apart?

Laurel’s Ingredients

Laurel and her team handpick ingredients rich with antioxidants 🌸 and medicinal properties. Each product has an unmistakably fresh smell, indicating that the ingredients are pure and unrefined.

From oils to hydrosols each plant is known and nurtured from ‘seed to bottle’ to capture the medicinal constituents as well as what some refer to as the ‘soul’ of the plant. 🌿

Laurel also chooses to omit more traditional filler ingredients like water, aloe, glycerin, or alcohol in their formulas as those offer no medicinal value and are usually present in order to dilute.

Laurel’s Sourcing Story

Laurels partners with organic and biodynamic farms typically no more than 100 miles from her barn in northern California. ☀️

“Sourcing defines who we are as a company, and in many ways defines who I am as a human being – I can’t imagine anything more important to both the heart and science of our formulas than sourcing.“
– Laurel

They are mindful of giving back to the land they harvest from and committed to safe, sustainable farming methods as a responsibility to the planet. This is why biodynamic farms are chosen to produce many of their ingredients.

Biodynamic Farming

Not only does biodynamic farming reduce the environmental impact of a farm, but it enhances the vitamin and nutrient-density and active compounds of plants.

Aside from focusing on soil health and restricting synthetic chemicals, fertilizers, and pesticides, 🚫 biodynamic farms are considered their own ecosystem, restoring the nutrients in the soil naturally.

They also harvest on a specific lunar calendar 🌙 schedule to reap the most nutritionally robust plants.

Because of this, biodynamic plants have been found to contain up to

• 13% more potassium,

• 20% more sodium,

• 34% more iron, and

• 47% more Vitamin C than conventional plants.

Processing

Once harvested, raw ingredients are delivered to the barn and assessed by their plant-loving production team by smell and color. Each ingredient is mindfully processed and the unusable parts are composted.

Every bottle and balm is hand-poured and each mask is measured out by the spoonful.

Every bottle is hand-polished around a community table and the human spirit can be felt in their products.

Laurel vs. Medical Grade Skincare

  • Medical grade skin care products are clear or white

  • Laurel’s raw, unrefined ingredients produce a rich palette of vibrant hues. They are more vibrant in color, which is a direct translation of their level of antioxidants and nutrients.

  • Medical grade skincare is formulated to activate within your skin

  • Laurel’s commitment to purity and quality ensures that pre-preserved, chemically refined, or otherwise processed ingredients are unwelcome in the Laurel Barn

  • Medical grade skincare is created for specific skin concerns

  • Laurel’s biodynamically farmed ingredients are the purest and most powerful ingredients, rich and effective, and chosen for their extreme benefits. She offers seasonal solutions for every skin type

  • Medical grade skincare contains large amounts of active ingredients

  • Slow Farmed ingredients impact the potency, efficacy, and results of Laurel products. They then go through a process created to preserve the brilliance and intelligence of Nature with mindfulness and intention in every step

  • Medical Grade Skincare products are lab-created, clinically tested and FDA regulated

  • Laurel’s commitment is to never sacrifice efficacy for commercial gain. While some refining processes are FDA and USDA-approved, they leave petrochemical residue and remove the beneficial antioxidants, nutrients, and enzymes from the final product

There are certainly times when medical-grade skin care is needed to reach results.

If you have any medical concerns, consult your doctor and/or dermatologist.

We’ll continue to offer organic and biodynamic skincare 🌱 here at the studio and would be elated to help you find the best fit for your skin!
